Causes of Puffy Eyes

The causes of puffy eyes may seem obvious to you, especially if yours are caused by a lack of rest and sleep. However, there are several causes (some obvious, some not) that you may want to take into consideration.

Here are some causes of puffy eyes:

  1. Lack of sleep and rest. This may be the most known and obvious reason for puffy eyes. Lack of sleep and rest causes you to have puffy eyes simply because you fail to give your eyes the rest that it needs. Sleeping is not just for the brain and body but also for the eyes. Our eyes are strained everyday due to our daily work. Give your eyes a break! Go ahead and sleep!
  2. Fatigue. This goes with the first one. Your eyes have the ability to reflect the level of fatigue your body is enduring and suffering. A puffy eye area is your body’s way of telling you to stop and rest.
  3. Aging. As you age, your skin tissue is not as firm as when you were younger. The places where the skin is the thinnest are more prone to creases. Double up on some moisturizer and avoid sun exposure.
  4. Allergies. If you develop unexplainable, sudden puffy eyes you may be having an allergic reaction. Rule out any new products you have recently tried. If all else fails, you can see your doctor about getting an allergy test.
  5. Thyroid malfunction. Though this is one of the rarest causes of puffy eyes, you may want to consider it if you have extremely puffy eyes that cannot otherwise be explained.
